Northeastern clinched at least a share of its third-straight Northeastern Coastal Conference title by way of holding off Hertford County 37-34 on Friday night.
It took this 17-yard (maybe closer to 18, video doesn’t lie) field goal by NHS kicker Shawn Swayne with 15.8 seconds left for the go-ahead points.
There was also a moment for senior offensive lineman Chaz McDaniel, who scooped up a fumble on the 1 for a touchdown.
The Eagles (8-2, 5-0 NCC) avoided the upset by the Bears (7-3, 4-1) despite having five turnovers, but NHS did force some of its own like this pick by Randy Griffin. With a win Friday at Currituck, NHS could fall within Nos. 1-3 in the 2A state playoffs.
As far as postseason invites for the NCC, the league will get at least four in the Eagles, Bears (2AA), Edenton and First Flight. Three of the four could be home in the opening round (Nighthawks being on the road).
Pasquotank (4-6 record) is out after losing its regular season finale at home to Bertie.
