Brackets are finalized (I think?) for this year’s state football playoffs. The usual eight divisions of glory are set and northeastern North Carolina schools are found in three of them: 1A, 1AA and 2A.
Let’s look at 2A, where Northeastern (No. 4 seed) plays fellow Northeastern Coastal Conference school First Flight, No. 5 Hertford County could await the winner and No. 8 Edenton gets Ayden-Grifton for a third-straight year. Those clubs have beaten each other in the last two meetings.
Geography hurts the NCC as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, if applicable, will find a way for teams to have shorter trips in the playoffs whether conference foe or not. A side note, however: the irony if First Flight upsets NHS after the Eagles beat the Nighthawks in soccer Friday night.
Unfortunately due to the NCHSAA’s push for less travel, Northeastern got a No. 4 instead of a 3 or 2, seeing that it would better suit a game against First Flight.
In the 1AA playoffs, Camden gets a rematch, too, against Princeton. This time it’s sans now-N.C. State back Johnny Frazier and at Camden as an 8/9 game. Perquimans’ 43-42 overtime loss to Columbia didn’t affect its seeding (since Wildcats are in 1A anyway), but challenge is no less tougher going to East Carteret.
